We are pleased to announce the recipients of our 2018 annual scholarships! Due to the overwhelming response we received this year, we took an extra week to review our applicant pool, so we appreciate your patience. We encourage those of you who applied and were not selected to apply again next year. Since it was so difficult to make these selections from so many deserving students, we ask that you stay tuned to our Med Mal Blog for updates on additional scholarships we will be creating for the 2019-2020 application period!
This year’s Weiss & Paarz Annual National Law Scholarship will be awarded to Marina Allen, a 2L at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Marina is pursuing a legal career in health law and spent this past summer working for Indiana’s Attorney General as a medical licensing law clerk, investigating consumer complaints about medical professionals and writing up administrative summaries to identify statutory violations and if necessary, make charging recommendations. She continues to explore a career in health law from a varied perspective this Fall through an externship with Indiana University Health’s Corporate Legal Services. Marina has also been selected as Riley Children’s Hospital’s 2018-2019 Leadership in Education Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Law Fellow. This position will train her to help manage health care delivery processes for families and children with chronic neurodevelopmental disorders. Marina is the first in her family to obtain a higher education and we are proud to provide some financial assistance in her quest to better our healthcare system.
This year’s Weiss & Paarz Annual Local Law Scholarship will be awarded to Corey Repasy, a 1L at Rutgers Law School. Corey is pursuing a career in public interest law, which she developed an interest in after a series internships and work experiences focused on promoting human rights and educational equality for women in the Middle East. Currently, Corey is a paralegal at the Center for Family Representation, which is a non-profit dedicated to maintaining family units by keeping children out of the foster care system. She seeks to improve the legal system for disadvantaged populations with her future degree.
This year’s Weiss & Paarz Annual Rising Star Scholarship will be awarded to Jessica Ortiz, an undergraduate student at University of California – Riverside. Jessica graduated from high school with three Associate’s degrees and was valedictorian at the community college where her degrees were awarded. She served as editor-in-chief of her high school yearbook and spent her free time volunteering at a local church. After her sister was diagnosed with cancer at a young age, Jessica continued to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Throughout this experience, she developed a passion for healthcare and seeks a degree that will allow her to help other families facing major health crises.
Congratulations to our deserving recipients! Thank you to all of the incredible and inspiring candidates that took the time to apply for our scholarships. We cannot wait to hear from you next year!
